A police officer was shot and killed outside of Binghamton Monday. Authorities say the officer worked for the village of Johnson City Police Department. The Binghamton Police Chief says the officer was killed around 7:00 a.m. Monday.
Officer David Smith was responding to a disturbance call at Southern Tier Imaging. That’s when police say 43-year-old James Clark, an MRI technician came running out of the building and began attacking Officer Smith as he tried to get out of his patrol car.
Investigators say Clark managed to get Officer Smith’s gun and shoot him three times. Meanwhile, a second officer arrived returning fire and shooting Clark.
Officer Smith died at the scene. Clark was taken across the street to Wilson Medical Center where he died in the operating room.
Officer Smith is the first Johnson City Police officer to die in the line fire. He has been on the force for 18 years and leaves behind a wife and one child.
