Gates Police tell News10NBC that a 16-year-old accused of robbing five different businesses in Gates with a gun was back in school Tuesday after he got bailed out of jail. Keith Speed is a high school student at Gates Chili.
News10NBC spoke with the school superintendent about having a student charged with violent felonies back in school. Kimberle Ward, the Superintendent of the Gates Chili School District, released a statement saying, “We are cooperating with law enforcement. Our responsibility is to protect the safety of that student and every student in the district.
Keith Speed was arrested and charged on Sunday with five counts of robbery. Police say he robbed a pharmacy and several gas stations. Police say he pulled out a gun on cashier each time. Police say he used a BB gun, but it is hard to tell the difference between a BB gun and a real handgun.
News10NBC got a tip that Speed was back in school. Students even tweeted that they saw him in the building. The Gates Police Chief confirmed that Speed was out of jail and back in class.
News10NBC Berkeley Brean asked, “Do you think they should be allowed, if they're that young, to go back into school, around their classmates?”
Chief Jim VanBrederode, Gates Police, said, “Well, it doesn't involve the school and I can understand the frustration if he is back in school that that would be a concern, but I’m not sure how we could stop it or how the criminal justice system could stop it.”
Keith Speed is in the Town of Gates Court Tuesday evening. We'll have details on News10NBC at 11 on what happened and we'll try to ask him about going back to school Tuesday.
