It's been nearly five years since shoppers have been allowed to walk around inside the Medley Centre.

I-Team 10 got a rare look inside and an update on the issue of code violations. We also learned the Irondequoit Fire Marshal will tour the mall Wednesday to determine if the alleged violations have been corrected.

There's been a lot of clean-up work going on at Medley Centre ever since I-Team 10 first showed you the pictures of water damage caused by a frozen sprinkler pipe. On Wednesday, the fire marshal will get a first-hand look and he'll see what I-Team 10 saw Tuesday.

Eric Bauer took I-Team 10 inside the Medley Centre Tuesday. He's been contracted by mall owner Scott Congel to take care of upkeep on the empty building. He showed us the bulk of the damage near the east entrance of the mall and in the food court area.

Brett Davidsen, I-Team 10, asked, “Is there a way to quantify or put a dollar amount on what you figure the damage was to the mall?”

Eric Bauer, E.B. Galaxy Construction, said, "I don't think it's substantial at all because this mall is going to undergo some major renovations."

I-Team 10 was the first to show you photos taken by the fire marshal in January of the damage. The photos showed standing water, strewn ceiling tiles, floor tiles buckling and black sediment from sprinkler pipes. The town cited the mall for failing to have a working fire protection system and for having combustibles stored inside.

Bauer said, "The pictures that did come out were just very close up on a couple specific things and if there was other pictures that could have been distributed, you'd see 90% of the mall is in pristine condition."

It's true that the vast majority of the mall does not appear damaged and is just as it looked when it closed more than five years ago. The impacted areas have now largely been cleaned up. Outside, signs have been posted warning that the sprinkler system has been disabled. Whether that will satisfy the fire marshal Wednesday remains to be seen. He sent Congel and his partner a letter spelling out in detail at least eight items that need to be addressed to be in compliance.

Bauer said, "I believe that with the postings and making sure everything was shut down properly and as we walk through, you see there really isn't much of anything at all in the mall at this point."

The town says regardless of what happens Wednesday at the inspection; a mall representative will still have to appear in court next week to answer to the citations.
