Jury selection began Wednesday in the case of Dawn Nguyen. She is the woman accused of buying the guns police say William Spengler used in his 2012 shooting rampage. A total of four firefighters were shot, two of them fatally. Now a jury must decide if she’s guilty of lying to authorities when she bought those guns.

One hundred potential jurors in the case of Dawn Nguyen packed Justice Thomas Moran’s courtroom Wednesday.

Nguyen is facing one felony count of first-degree falsification of a business record for allegedly buying the guns police say William Spengler used during his 2012 shooting rampage.

Lawyers from both sides did not talk to the media, but News10NBC did talk with local defense attorney, Jon Getz, who is following the case. He says selecting 12 impartial jurors and at least two alternates may be challenging.

Jon Getz, Defense Attorney, said, “So you need to let that jury know what they are doing is important, that they really need to say what is on their mind and that they really need to be fair and impartial because it's that important for all the people involved certainly the defendant but also for the government and for the court.”

The media wasn't allowed in the courtroom for most of the process Wednesday because there wasn't enough room. News10NBC didn’t see any firefighters or family members at court, but that’s likely going to change when the actual trial gets underway.

Getz says he expects jury selection to last at least three days.

Getz said, “What everybody has to hash out is just because you know about the case you can’t be fair and impartial to the evidence.”

If convicted, Nguyen faces up to four years in prison.  This is just her state trial. She’s still facing federal charges that carry much more serious penalties.
