New research is casting doubt that vitamin D, through sunlight or supplements, offers any true health advantages.
Vitamin D is used to treat a variety of diseases but a study testing the supplement on more than 100 health conditions found no clear evidence of any benefits.
The results even refuted the belief that vitamin D helps prevent osteoporosis, suggesting it may not be essential to bone health as previously thought.
Another study found low vitamin D levels were linked to an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer and other causes.
However, only treatment with vitamin D-3 supplements appeared to help reduce this risk in clinical trials.
