Siri, Cortana, Cortana, Siri. Microsoft has rolled out a new virtual assistant for its Windows Phone devices trying to make inroads into ground that has been broken by Siri, the talkative artificial intelligence device built by Apple into iPhone technology.

The Microsoft version is named after a character in the company's "Halo" video games. Besides speaking to users, Cortana is designed to anticipate information you might want, the way that Google Now does on Android devices.

Cortana is among the new features that will be part of a Windows Phone update called version 8.1. It's due to start showing up on new devices in a month and several months later as a free download for existing phones.
