On Saturday, The Fairy God Mothers of Greater Rochester held its 11th annual prom fair giving more than 425 girls, who normally couldn't afford to go to the prom, the chance to attend.
After spending just a few hours at the Riverside Convention Center Novella King says she found the perfect prom dress.
“When I saw it I knew it was mine because it's different and I wanted to be different,” said King.
King’s dress may be different than everyone else’s, but her situation is like hundreds of other local girls who normally couldn't afford to go to the prom if it weren't for the help of The Fairy God Mothers.
Co-founder Rene Spallina says, “To the girl it's about the dress, but what we're trying to give back is self-esteem and confidence and feeling good about yourself from within.”
Since 2004, The Fairy God Mothers have been providing gowns, shoes, accessories and even alterations for just a few dollars, rather than hundreds.
"When she has the dress that she has picked that is her dress and she's come through you can see she's beaming and that's what we talk about self-esteem and confidence because it's radiating and you can see that their shoulders go back and they have a twinkle in their eye and the mom is usually crying,” said Spallina.
