Wrongfully convicted man closer to receiving multi-million dollar settlement

He spent 20 years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. A local man is one step closer to receiving a multi-million dollar settlement from Monroe County.

The county executive has sent a referral to the legislature regarding the settlement for Frank Sterling. Sterling was originally convicted in the 1988 murder of Viola Manville, but years later, DNA evidence surfaced connecting another man to that crime.

The referral recommends that the legislature approve a settlement amount of more than $7 million. The recommendation will go to a legislature committee later this month and the full legislature in May.
