Red Wings top 'Pigs, 4-2, Thursday night

The Red Wings offense had done much of the heavy lifting through the first five games of the season, but on Thursday it was the Wings pitching staff that delivered.

Four Rochester hurlers combined to allow just two runs on five hits as the Red Wings won their fourth straight game with a 4-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA.

Logan Darnell, in his first start of the season for Rochester, went 4.0 innings allowing just one unearned run on one hit. He walked three and struck out five over his 70-pitch outing.

Prior to Thursday, the southpaw had last appeared in a game on March 30 when he threw 4.0 innings in the Red Wings last spring training game.

Following Darnell was Edgar Ibarra who tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season.

After picking up just his second career save on Wednesday, Brooks Raley, the third left-hander of the night for Rochester, allowed one run on two hits in 1.2 innings.

From there, Wings skipper Gene Glynn then turned things over to his closer, Michael Tonkin, who worked a four-out save - his first of the 2014 season after going 14-for-15 in such opportunities a season ago at Triple-A.

The Red Wings offense did collect 12 more hits on Thursday as they now have collected at least 11 base knocks in each of the last five games. After going 12-for-36 at the dish, Rochester raised their International League best batting average to .321 on the season through six games.

Deibinson Romero, Wilkin Ramirez and Eric Fryer led the attack combining to go 7-for-10 with four doubles and three RBI.

It was Fryer that put the Wings in front ringing a double off the left field wall scoring Ramirez and Eduardo Nunez in the second inning. Nunez, who was making his Red Wings debut after the Twins traded for him earlier in the week, played 5 ½ innings going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a run scored. The former Yankee also made an error at third base which led to the IronPigs unearned run in the 4th inning.

Romero added an RBI double in the fifth after the IronPigs (3-5) had trimmed the lead in half and Chris Rahl gave the Red Wings a 4-1 lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

The Red Wings (4-2) send right-hander Alex Meyer to the mound in game two of the series on Friday night as Rochester looks for a fifth straight win.
