Early Learning Council holds meeting to discuss Pre-K expansion

A public hearing was held in Rochester Tuesday night with the city's Early Learning Council.

That's a group Mayor Lovely Warren brought together after Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed expanding pre-kindergarten statewide -- that's now a part of the state budget. The goal is to find out what challenges and opportunities come with educating some of Rochester's youngest population.

Council Co-Chair Joanne Larson says, "Research really shows that a high quality Pre-K experience prepares children very well for their future educations and it's free. So I think that the more we get the information out and provide equitable access to Pre-K, the more children will take advantage of it."

We're told Governor Cuomo's plan will create $1.5 billion in competitive Pre-K grants and open up the program to charter schools -- which before were not eligible for Pre-K funding.
