For those thinking about spending some time boating on Lake Ontario this weekend, the Coast Guard has a warning for you.

The Coast Guard warns that even though the air might feel warm, the water is still extremely cold. According to the Coast Guard, five people have already died from cold water exposure on Lake Erie. Officials also have tips to keep you safe on the water, with the first being to never go boating alone. They also say to make sure your boat is thoroughly inspected before taking it out for the first time and have safety equipment ready to go. Free boat inspections can be arranged and scheduled with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. With temperatures warming up and weak ice posing a threat, the Coast Guard cautions against ice fishing.
