Fans gathered at the private airport in Buffalo where Kelly's plane was scheduled to land, to show their support for the Hall of Fame quarterback.
Little did they know, they'd be hearing Kelly would be staying put!. Kelly’s brother Dan made the announcement that Kelly would finish his treatment for jaw cancer in Western New York.
News10NBC was at the Prior Aviation in Cheektowaga, where Jim and Jill Kelly landed about Saturday evening, and spoke with fans excited to hear the news.
Excitement is the word used to describe the feeling of fans as they gathered Saturday. Fans were hoping to get a glimpse of Jim Kelly as he got off the plane, but it turns out Kelly's plane landed out of sight for the fans and our cameras, in another part of the airport.
Dressed from top to bottom in just about everything Bills, some brought signs, all to show support and welcome Jim Kelly back home to Buffalo.
Despite the fact they weren't able to get a glimpse of the Hall of Fame quarterback, fans said they wanted to be here to show Kelly their support.
"We thought we'd come out and show our support, and wish him well and all that, and hope everything is alright. (We) hope he gets past this. He’s got a tough road, and I hope he can get over it," fan Paul Heimer.
"For him to have adopted this city says that we mean a lot more than, we’re more than just a place and a team. We’re a community that actually takes people in and makes them feel welcome. For him to throw that love back at us, for all the philanthropy he’s done, for all the support he’s shown, for his efforts to try to keep the team in Buffalo, whatever they may be, we have to support him right back because he's basically taken us in," said fan Michael Parthum.
This is the first time Jim Kelly has been home since the weekend of March 22nd.
In an Instagram post Saturday, Jill Kelly, Jim's wife, shared a message from Jim to his fans for all of their support:
“Hey everybody, I'm glad to be home, back in Buffalo. Sorry I missed some of you guys at the airport, but now I'm here with my family. Thank you, God bless you, and I will be back,” said Kelly.
