A Rochester couple will return to Boston for their fourth Boston Marathon on Monday.
For better or for worse, Matt and Karin Kellman run side by side. It’s the groundwork for their relationship.
“He said he has always wanted to run a marathon, so I said we could start running and train together,” said Karin.
Since 2001, the Kellman’s have pushed each other to finish. The duo has run the Boston three times together, but last year Karin stayed at home with their two children while Matt ran the race. The two spoke on the phone after his race. An hour later the bombs went off.
“I was trying to call him. People were trying to call me, and it was really scary. I didn’t know if he was dead or alive,” said Karin.
Karen describes it as shear panic; not knowing if their family would be ripped apart. Then a phone call from an unknown number showed up on Karin’s phone, and Matt’s voice was on the other end.
“What a relief. Amazing. To be without Matt would be awful. We have a family to raise, and we are partners,” said Karin.
Karin will be joining Matt in Boston this year.
“Us together is going to be special. It is going to be on Karin’s birthday again, and that is always special to us,” said Matt.
“We appreciate all we are capable of, the life we live and that we are together,” said Karin.
