Staying safe on the water

By: Rachel Spotts

The weather may be nice but the water is still dangerously cold. It’s a beautiful Easter Sunday in Charlotte but there are no boats on the water today.

News10NBC spoke with a Coast Guard officer who wants to warn boaters looking to get out onto Lake Ontario that the water is still very cold. It only takes 10 minutes for hypothermia to kick in.

The Coast Guard is warning all boaters that just because the air is warm outside doesn’t mean the water is as well.

In Lake Ontario, temperatures are just above freezing. If you do go out on the water, it’s very important to wear a life vest because if you fall in, the vest will help you stay afloat if your muscles go numb from the cold.
