Governor Andrew Cuomo wants the federal government to recall a toy called Clingy Darts. They come in a pack of four.
The darts are sold all over the state at dollar stores like Dollar Tree and could even be at places like Toys R Us. The governor is calling for them specifically to be taken off the shelves of Dollar Tree stores.
What makes this toy so bad is a chemical called DEHP and in these “Clingy Darts”, state officials found six times more than what’s considered legal.
Judy Braiman, Empire State Consumer Project President, said, “It could hurt them later in life. It is a hormone disrupter. It could open them up to possible diseases, like cancer. It shouldn't be in children's toys at all.”
Judy Braiman is the President of the Empire State Consumer Project. She says you'd be surprised where else you can find this chemical. The chemical can be found in places like the rubber in artificial turf, a baby's teething toy, even a little toy animal. Braiman says the issue is where the products are made.
Braiman said, “My personal recommendation is I wouldn't purchase anything, if possible from any other country like China, I just wouldn't do it. They don't have the same regulations.”
News10NBC talked with parents to get their reaction.
Jane Marseglaa said, “He has a lot of wooden toys.”
Taylor Baker said, “It's a little scary. They put stuff in their mouths. Have to watch out for that.”
