Electric car charging stations are showing up more around the Rochester community. City leaders are hoping that by having more charging stations it will not only help the environment, but save people some money.

The city opened up the new stations at Rochester City Hall Tuesday morning. Not only will they be available for city vehicles, but they will also be open to the public for any driver to use.

Rochester City Council Vice President Dana Miller bought his electric car three years ago he says when there weren't many around.

Dana Miller, Rochester City Council, said, "Since that time, there are more than a dozen vehicles on the market now from a wide range of manufacturers, so there's an electric vehicle for almost everybody."

And now, it's easy for local residents who own them to power their cars.  On Tuesday, city officials unveiled the newest charging station behind City Hall. There are now twenty-four stations in seven different spots around the city including the Rochester Public Market and the Court Street garage.

A grant covered more than half of the project. Taxpayers picked up the rest of tab, which was $140,000.

Officials say it is difficult to say just how many Rochester residents own an electric car, but since the unofficial opening of these new charging stations three weeks ago, all of the stations have been used.

Normal Jones said, “We've been able to see a usage of 280 kwhrs, which equates to saving about 36 gallons of gasoline.”

City officials say this has decreased Rochester’s emissions.

Councilman Miller hopes to lead by example, encouraging more residents to follow in his carbon footprints.

During the first year, people will be able to charge their cars for free. NYSERDA will be tracking them to see how often they’re being used.
