A Holley man is in jail after deputies say he left three puppies in a hot car.

Sheriff’s deputies say 47-year-old Nathan Stephens left the puppies in his car Monday while he went to Eastview Mall. Investigators say they were called to the mall around 8 p.m. Right now, it is unclear how long the puppies were in the vehicle. According to meteoroligist Rich Caniglia, it was 70 degrees around 8 p.m.

Stephens is charged with three counts of animal cruelty, the counts of confinement of a companion animal and aggravated unlicensed operation.

The Humane Society is now caring for the puppies.
