A retired Rochester police officer who served in the Iraq War has been selected to become the next senior enlisted soldier in the New York Army National Guard.

Officials at National Guard headquarters in suburban Albany say Command Sgt. Maj. Louis Wilson will take over the position later this year. The 38-year veteran of the National Guard served 20 years with the Rochester Police Department.

Wilson currently serves with the 53rd Troop Command, based at Camp Smith in Westchester County. He has also served with National Guard units based in Buffalo and Kingston. Wilson was deployed to Iraq in 2004-05 with the Troy-based 42nd Infantry Division.

He'll replace Command Sgt. Maj. Frank Wicks of West Sand Lake. Wicks plans to retire from the National Guard on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
