Construction for new Irondequoit library started on Wednesday

A multi-million dollar project for the new Irondequoit Library started construction on Wednesday.

The new $13 million facility will be built on the east lawn of Irondequoit Town Hall.  The town’s two public libraries will now be combined into one.

Irondequoit residents have voted on the new library twice, once back in April 2013, but multiple people filed lawsuits saying the plan violated environmental law.  After that, people signed a petition calling for another public vote to authorize the bond for the project.  The second vote passed almost two to one in favor of the plan.

Staffing will remain the same at the new facility, but residents can look forward to more books and a drive-up book return.

Construction is expected to take about a year and a half.
