A community in Genesee County is mourning the loss of a well-known and loved teenager. People who live in Corfu woke up to learn Dean Cullinan died Wednesday night.
Police say the 19-year-old was walking his bike along Route 33 in the town of Darien when he was hit by a SUV. Investigators say he was walking his bike toward his house just two miles away.
Justin Sformo has a heavy heart. He can’t believe his close friend is gone. Dean Cullinan was hit by a SUV and died Wednesday night. Sformo says his friend cared more about other people than himself and had a fun-loving personality.
Justin Sformo said, “He was the one that would get up there and sing the loudest, act the hardest. He was just like an overwhelming force and I don't think Corfu is ever going to be the same without him."
Sheriff’s deputies say a 31-year-old man who was driving the SUV that hit the teen immediately got out and performed CPR. He waited until emergency crews arrived. Investigators say the driver did not appear to be impaired and has been cooperating with police.
News10NBC heard from the superintendent of the Pembroke School District and he vividly remembers Cullinan when he was a student. In a statement, the superintendent says, “Dean was a fun person, extremely likeable, and I remember his great performance in the high school play when he was a senior. Our focus now will be to support his family and friends.”
Investigators say they'll continue investigating and that they still have a lot of work to do.
Cullinan has an older and younger brother.
