Update: Proposed changes to brewing regulations

Created: 04/24/2014 12:44 PM WHEC.com

There is an update on an FDA proposal involving "spent grain" that we first reported earlier this week.

Senator Charles Schumer says the FDA has now agreed to reverse the proposed regulation.

The FDA was attempting to regulate "spent grain" which is a natural byproduct of the brewing process. The new rules would have prevented brewers from selling or donating it directly to farmers, who use it to feed animals.

Officials say nearly 90-percent of brewers give the spent grains to local farmers.
