Police have seized 20 dogs and shot one during dogfighting raids in the Buffalo area.
The Buffalo News reports that the raids began early Friday at seven locations in Buffalo and Grand Island.
Police said five people were arrested and at least one more arrest was expected.
Authorities removed the dogs from the homes they raided.
Officials said the animals would be cared for by the SPCA.
A resident of the house where a dog was killed said the dog was a 13-year-old boxer.
The woman denied that there was a dogfighting operation at the house.
But authorities said the houses they raided were full of animals that were chained and drugged.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said the dog that was shot must have attacked officers.
