Chris Parmelee's 10th inning homer gave the Red Wings a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Knights Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. The teams met again Monday at 7:05 p.m., with another Kids Eat Free Monday event.

Red Wings left-handed starter Logan Darnell set down the side in order in the first inning, throwing only 11 pitches, including strikeouts to start and end the inning and a pop out in between.

Danny Santana started off the Red Wings first inning with a lead-off walk, and was caught trying to steal second base with Doug Bernier at the plate. Bernier reached first base on a five-pitch walk, but the Charlotte starter Charlie Leesman worked around the two walks to strand the runner.

Darnell had another swift inning in the second, inducing a flyout and two groundouts on 10 pitches, through two perfect innings.

The Wings threatened in the second, with a double from Brad Nelson. Chris Rahl sent a deep fly ball into left-center field, but the ball was chased down by the Knights center fielder Gorkys Hernandez to end the inning.

In the top half of the third, Darnell worked around a lead-off walk. Tyler Saladino popped up a bunt to the right side of the pitcher's mound and Darnell reached out with the glove to make the grab, then spun around to make the throw and doubled-off Alex Liddi at first. Darnell retired the side with his third strikeout of the game.

Darnell struck out his fourth batter of the ball game before the Knights picked up their first hit of the game in the fourth inning. Darnell managed to get the next two batters to fly out to end the inning.

Once again Rochester got a base runner to first with an Oswaldo Arcia walk, but the Wings stranded him there after a strikeout and a flyout, keeping the score 0-0.

The Knights got a runner to third base in the fifth when Denis Phipps reached on an error by Beresford and stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error from catcher Dan Rohlfing. Darnell recorded his fifth strikeout of the game to strand Phipps at third base.

Rahl started the action for the Wings in the fifth inning, extending his hitting streak to eight games. With Beresford at the plate, Rahl stole second base, his seventh of the season on the 1-0 pitch, and then Beresford moved him over to third with a groundout. Santana lined a 0-1 pitch to center field to score Rahl, to get the Wings on the board and give them them the lead 1-0. Bernier then moved Santana over to second base with a swinging bunt, but Parmelee struck out to end the inning.

The Knights had an even better scoring attempt in the sixth inning, putting two runners on base with one out. Darnell struck out Josh Phegley for the second out on a wild pitch, which put runners at second and third base for cleanup hitter Matt Davidson. Darnell got Davidson on a weak grounder to first base, keeping Charlotte off the scoreboard.

In the top of the seventh, Andy Wilkins homered into the Rochester bullpen in right field and Phipps followed with a double off the wall in center. Tyler Saladino reached base on a play that was scored an error on third baseman Deibinson Romero, and when Blake Tekotte blooped a hit into shallow right field the Knights had gone ahead 2-1 and signaled an end to Darnell's day. Yohan Pino relieved Darnell and got a pair of flyouts to end the rally.

Both starters turned in outstanding efforts. Darnell allowed five hits in 6 1/3 innings, two runs (one earned), and one walk to go with six strikeouts. Leesman allowed one earned run on four hits in six innings, walking three and fanning five.

The Wings looked to even the score against reliever David Purcey in the eighth. Bernier worked Purcey for a walk, and Parmelee followed with a base hit to right. The single extended Parmelee's hitting streak to 12 games. Purcey struck out Romero, then walked Eric Farris to bring up Rohlfing with the bases loaded. Rohlfing connected for a long fly to left field, deep enough to score Bernier with the tying run.

Pino struck out the side in the ninth, giving him five straight strikeouts.

The Wings were retired in order by Donnie Veal in the ninth, and the game went into extra innings.

Hernandez beat out an infield single with one out in the 10th, despite a fine defensive play by Romero at third base and a nice scoop by Parmelee at first. Hernandez stole second base, and Carlos Sanchez singled to right field. Hernandez was waved home, but right fielder Bernier made a perfect throw to Rohlfing and Hernandez was out at the plate. Phegley followed with a hit, but Pino's sixth strikeout of the game ended the threat.

With one out in the Wings 10th, Parmelee crushed a 2-0 pitch into the Wings bullpen for the game winning hit off Veal.
