New York lawmakers are putting forward a package of legislation to help combat the resurgence of heroin.

The six bills would increase penalties for selling opioids that result in death, equip first responders with overdose-reversal drugs, require health insurance providers to cover rehab programs and anti-addiction medication, create a public service announcement about heroin abuse targeted at teenagers and provide rehabilitation services in communities.

Senate Democrats introduced the legislation on Monday following forums in December about the increase in heroin use plaguing Long Island and upstate communities. The conference is expected to unveil a report on their findings on Tuesday.

The Senate Majority - Republicans and a group of breakaway Democrats - are currently hosting their own forums statewide about heroin and opioid use.
