Why was a 17-month-old baby in Greece killed? Right now, we don’t know how Rileigh Daniels died, but Greece Police say her death has been ruled a homicide.
Late Tuesday afternoon, News10NBC learned the autopsy on the child's body has been completed. While police are not yet releasing her cause of death, they do say they are treating the case as a homicide.
Rileigh Daniels died last week. According to investigators, it was last week when the mother came home from work to her apartment at Ridgedale Manor, checked on the toddler and immediately called 911. Rileigh was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Family says she had a seizure, swelling and bleeding in the brain and later had a stroke. Police say they were suspicious right away because the child's injuries did not appear natural.
Lt. Richard Downs, Greece Police, said, "There are several people we're looking at more closely than others, but we can't name any potential suspects at this time."
Police say the mother's boyfriend was at the apartment at the time. Investigators have tried to question him, but a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the case says the boyfriend is reluctant to cooperate until he has consulted with an attorney. He has not been charged and is not in custody.
For investigators, it has been an emotional case as they try to piece together details of this crime.
Lt. Downs said, “It's very difficult. I have three children of my own and I’m sure anybody that has children can understand the difficulty of an investigation like that. "
The family has started an online fundraiser to collect money to pay for Rileigh's funeral. The goal is $6,000 dollars.
