A man has been arrested for the death of a 17-month-old little girl.
Police say Cory Favata is the boyfriend of the child’s mother. The 23-year-old is charged with second-degree murder. Police say he is responsible for the death of Rileigh Daniels. She died last Thursday. Her family says she was shaken by Favata. Favata was arraigned in Greece Town Court Tuesday night.
The family of Rileigh Daniels was in court Tuesday night. During the arraignment, they were visibly upset.
Favata is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother. He entered a not guilty plea Tuesday night in court. According to court paperwork, police say Favata acted recklessly and caused the death of Rileigh Daniels.
Daniels’ family says the baby was shaken last Monday while her mother was at work. When her mother came home, she called 911. Baby Rileigh suffered a seizure and brain swelling and passed away Thursday. Police have not confirmed how she died.
Favata will be back in Greece for court on May 5. The judge sent him to jail with no bail set.
The family has started an online fundraiser to collect money to pay for Rileigh's funeral. The goal is $6,000 dollars.
The aunt of Rileigh, Terri Feenin, released a statement saying, “We all loved our Rileigh very much. She was a very happy little girl; very smart, always picking up new things quickly. She was energetic and full of laughter. She could put a smile on the saddest face by sharing one of her own. It is some comfort that an arrest has been made. We are relieved the police are getting the facts worked out so that justice can be done for our little angel. We appreciate all of the support from our many friends and family. We are touched by the overwhelming support and kindness of strangers locally and across the country. We would like to sincerely thank all of you. It really means a lot to us that so many people care while we are suffering an unimaginable loss.”
