It can be hard for people with disabilities to find work but an event today is aimed at making it a little easier.
Wednesday morning, the Improving Employment Outcomes for Special Populations symposium symposium was held to help people improve their job search. It targeted those with mental and developmental disabilities, people getting out of prison and refugees.
More than 90 providers from the county were on hand. Organizers say people with disabilities or some type of barrier to employment can be hesitant to seek out job opportunities.
Director of Employment Services Sara Taylor said, “We need to change the culture and the mindset with our program participants, as well as service providers, to say it's good when people work, it's good when we move people toward employment to self-sufficiency, and they feel better about themselves."
This symposium is the first of its kind for Monroe County.
