Agencies and officials across the state say action needs to be taken to prevent rail disasters during crude oil shipments like ones that have happened in other states and Canada.

Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for a rule that rail companies tell local first responders about what kinds of hazardous materials are being shipped.

Senator Schumer said, "We've had instances of derailments where the firefighters didn't know what was in the tank cars and didn't have the proper materials to fight them."

New York has become a central route for the transportation of crude oil from North Dakota to coastal refineries, with tens of millions of gallons passing through every day.
