Was it a bullet? A day after a truck driver says his tractor trailer was hit I-390, another driver says he’s positive a bullet hit his pickup truck.
The man says it happened last month while he was driving in the city of Rochester.
Thursday’s investigation on I-390 in Gates isn’t the first time we’ve heard of something like this happening. Just last week, someone thought a bullet hit their vehicle on 390 in Greece.
Now another man says he thinks the same thing happened to him.
Police in Greece say they did receive a call from a person after Thursday's incident, which had damage to their fender a few weeks ago and wondered if it might have been from a bullet. Police were unable to determine what caused it.
News10NBC talked exclusively with a man on camera who says he's sure his windshield was hit by gunfire a few weeks ago. The man didn’t want to be identified, because he’s afraid of retribution. News10NBC is calling him, “Tom”. “Tom” showed News10NBC pictures of his pickup truck he took shortly after he says he was a random victim of an unknown shooter.
"Tom" said, "It was literally inches from my head and you start thinking after, a lot of things thinking about and I felt like I was just part of somebody's game that day."
It was April 8 and he was headed south on Dewey Avenue near Ridgeway. He says that’s when he heard the sound of a gunshot and saw his windshield was damaged. He kept driving for another block until he reached a fire station, then stopped and called 911.
His frightening experience happened before the recent police investigations we've witnessed on two sections of I- 390. Last week, Greece Police began investigating after a motorist reported having his car hit by a bullet on the highway near West Ridge Road.
Then Thursday, police shutdown part of 390 in Gates after the driver of a tractor trailer says he was heading down the highway when he heard a sound and saw damage to his rear window. That set off a five hour full-scale search of the area.
Sheriff's investigators say they are still unsure if the truck was indeed hit by a bullet. Forensic tests of the vehicle were underway Friday. Police are not dismissing the similarities with the Greece case. Neither is "Tom" who wonders if his case may also be connected.
“Tom” said, "To hear 390 and Ridge Road and then yesterday, it's just, if it isn't the same person or people, it's very coincidental."
“Tom” says he was more cautious driving shortly after the incident happened to him, but says he's not sure what he could have done to avoid the situation. He fears that if this is a case of someone just randomly shootings at cars that it's only a matter of time until someone is injured or killed.
