Victor Boys Lacrosse is one of the best teams in Section V. That’s due in part to a sophomore sensation who has garnered the attention of major colleges.
Say the last name Maloney around a Victor lacrosse field, odds are you’ll get the response, “Which Maloney are you talking about?” The family is lacrosse from father to sons to daughter. They are headlined by Ryan, who as a sophomore is already committed to play at Cornell.
On a brick wall in Victor, Ryan Maloney hones his craft.
Ryan Maloney said, “I've had to put in a lot of time in the backyard on the walls, shooting, just so I can be as good as or better than everybody else.”
But the Blue Devils sophomore isn't just training; he's carrying on a family tradition.
Ryan Maloney said, “Having my brother play it, my older brother, I just looked up to him and my dad played in college.”
The tradition started with Ryan’s dad, who now officiates at the college level. Ryan's oldest brother, John, spent three years in a Blue Devils jersey before playing at the University of Albany.
Lacrosse isn't just for the Maloney men. His sister, Megan is also a standout at Victor and is headed to Canisius in the fall.
Megan Maloney said, “We started off just having fun and then we all became successful with it, so, I’m proud of my brothers.”
John Maloney, Ryan and Megan’s father, said, “We love lacrosse, I played when I was in college, all three kids play now so when we're looking to have fun when we're not studying, that's what we do.”
And when Ryan isn't hitting the books, he's hitting the wall. The Victor sophomore is so talented, he's garnered the attention of several Division I schools. At the age of 15 before Maloney can legally drive, he's already decided to attend Cornell University.
Ryan Maloney said, “It's obviously a good achievement, but still have a long season here at Victor, still have a couple more years and Cornell seems pretty far away now, but I’m definitely excited about it.”
Ryan has scored 37 goals in 12 games this season. That is fourth best in Section V.
