Eight student chefs, one victor. Students from East High School competed in “East High Iron Chef” at the Wegmans Conference Center on Sunday night.
The cooking competition is based off of Iron Chef America, a popular cooking show on Food Network.
East High Iron Chef is a part of a culinary class offered at the school. East High culinary teacher Jeff Christiano said the class has grown in popularity since they started the competition five years ago.
“It’s humbling. I never in a million years dreamed this would happen. We started out a very small program with six or seven kids, and now it has grown into this enormous program. It’s very well respected and has a lot of success stories, and that’s what makes me more proud than anything,” said Christiano.
The winner of the competition is Shavell Johnson. She will receive a one-year scholarship to MCC.
