It was a tragic loss for a Wayne County family. A two-year-old boy was killed after falling off a backhoe he was riding with his dad. Since the accident happened last week, an editorial was written in the Times of Wayne County, blaming the father for the death.
When the article came out, the family of the little boy was outraged. The father didn’t want to talk, but the mother invited News10NBC into their home to tell us about her husband and their child.
Tonya Northrup said, “My husband feels very guilty about it. All he wanted to do was make him happy one more time.”
Tonya Northrup says there are no words to describe the grief her family is going through over the loss of their two-year-old son, Jace. He was Tonya and Greg Northrup’s youngest child. He was killed last week in a tractor accident.
Northrup said, “My husband always re-fixes things. Everything for the kids, it's always been about the kids."
Northrup says Jace was riding on a tractor with his dad, on a seat that Greg had taken out of a van and welded onto the tractor so the kids could ride on it. Tonya says it had a seatbelt on it, but something went wrong.
Northrup said, “He just hit a bump. Jace came out of his seatbelt and Greg tried to get him and it did not work.”
Northrup is upset over the editorial. She says it portrays her husband as irresponsible. She says their yard is always full of kids, because they love kids and kids love them.
Northrup said, “He is the best dad and I want people to know that. I want people to know that he's the best father I could ever ask for."
No criminal charges have been filed in this case, but the Wayne County District Attorney says his office is still investigating.
