Many people lost everything when the floodwaters came in. The Arc of Yates, which recently underwent a remodel at its home, was completely flooded out.

Much of the damage is along East Elm Street in Penn Yan. But across town, there is devastation as well.

The Arc of Yates has displaced more than 100 developmentally disabled people. At the Arc of Yates, they are assessing the damage and salvaging what they can. When the nearby creek jumped its banks, the water began flooding in; leaving water, mud and devastation behind.

Kate Ring, Arc of Yates, said, “All the floors were done. We reconfigured all the space here. We put a nice new kitchen and cafeteria in and there are 100 people that occupy this space on a daily basis."

The building serves people from all over Yates County with developmental disabilities. There are day programs, physical therapy and psychiatric treatments offered daily. There’s even a manufacturing area where clients get paid to do packaging work for a local company. It is all now disrupted by the flood.

Ring said, “We have some insurance, but we're not certain we'll be able to cover all the expenses here with insurance.”

Ring says someone mentioned that the extent of the damage will cost a quarter of a million dollars.

Despite the weeks and months of work ahead, Ring says they are thankful for the timing of the storm. It hit during the night when no one was inside.

Ring said, "If we tried to evacuate this building in the length of time it took to have it flooded, it would have been impossible for us to do that. So we're feeling very fortunate."

The Arc of Yates says they are hoping to soon move into another building across the street on a temporary basis until they can get their facility cleaned and repaired.
