A big announcement was made on Saturday that will benefit city employees who identify as transgender.

Mayor Lovely Warren announced that the city of Rochester is adding healthcare benefits for transgender employees and their family members who are enrolled in the city’s enhanced medical plan.

The new coverage will pay for services related to gender re-assignment surgery, such as medical and psychological counseling, hormone therapy, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries.

The benefits will go into effect January of next year.
