In the wake of the recent flooding, a severely damaged camp on Keuka Lake is in desperate need of help.
Camp Good Days is a local camp which helps children and adults touched by cancer and other life threatening diseases. The camp was set to open on Saturday, but organizers had to cancel due to the extensive damage.
Officials say it has been a devastating week, but volunteer crews will help to rebuild the camp and get it back on its feet.
Mike Giardino is confident Camp Good Days will bounce back.
“We’re going to do it. We’re going to be open. We’re going to be strong,” said Giardino.
Starting Monday, volunteers say it’s all hands on deck as countless people take time out of their day to help with clean-up efforts at Camp Good Days. Officials say it could take weeks to repair all of the flood damage, like clearing out mud from the cabins and getting everything landscaped. The creek that runs through the camp overflowed leaving rocks and scattered debris everywhere, and Tamara Federico, Women’s Oncology Coordinator, said that is the number one issue.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. It was just unbelievable the way the creek just washed right through the camp and brought all the debris with it. I think that’s the biggest problem right now,” said Federico.
Otto Harnischfeger is a volunteer at Camp Good Days who says they already have a game plan for Monday.
“The volunteers will be here at 9 a.m. to register. We are going to attack the cabinets and get the bedding and framework out. We’re going to salvage anything that we can so that they aren’t affected by any mold,” said Harnischfeger.
Hundreds of volunteers have already reached out, but camp staff say they need as much help as they can get.
“We have great volunteers. We have so many people that are calling and emailing, and if people can’t physically come to help us then any monetary donation is always welcome as well,” said Federico.
