News10NBC has learned that 10 correction officers were taken to the hospital Monday evening following a fire at the Groveland Correctional Facility.
The facility is located on Sonyea Road in Sonyea. We have learned that the fire started in an AC unit in a vacant building known as the Peterson Academic Building.
The Department of Corrections says 10 correction officers were transported to local hospitals and several others received treatment at the prison, all for smoke inhalation. The Department of Corrections says the officers were injured while responding to the incident.
Acting Commissioner Anthony Annucci released a statement saying, “My thoughts are with the officers and their families. I thank them for their actions tonight, in helping to extinguish the fire, and wish them all a speedy recovery.”
News10NBC has learned the fire started in an AC unit in a vacant building known as the Peterson Academic Building. The Department of Corrections says the fire started as there was a county wide training emergency exercise in progress in the area. When the facility called for assistance, the training became a real emergency. Officials say there were paramedics and a doctor taking part in the training exercise.
