Sen. Charles Schumer says the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has completed environmental assessments of the three potential sites for a national veterans cemetery in western New York.

Schumer says the VA is expected to report no significant findings when it releases the report on Sunday. The environmental assessment is the final step before the VA can close on its preferred site.

The VA has been considering three sites east of Buffalo, one in suburban Lancaster and two in the rural Genesee County town of Pembroke. The preferred location is a 132-acre site in Pembroke that's just north of Thruway Exit 48A.

The VA announced four years ago that it wanted to build a new national veterans cemetery between Buffalo and Rochester. The closest national cemetery is in Bath in the Southern Tier.
