The Rochester Red Wings seven-game winning steak and 10-game home winning streak were snapped Tuesday afternoon in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Toledo Mud Hens. The Wings have now been shutout three times this season and twice by Toledo. After an off-day Wednesday, the Wings begin a four-game series in Scranton/WB on Thursday night.
Scott Diamond started for the Wings and went seven innings as he allowed three runs on six hits while striking out a tied for season-high six batters. Diamond hasn’t allowed a walk in 13 ½ innings dating back to his start on May 8 at Columbus.
The Wings went 7-1, winning the first seven games. The offense averaged 4.6 R/G, outscoring opponents 37-16…Starters went 5-1 as they allowed just 8 ER in 48.0 IP (1.50 ERA)…The Wings out-homered their opponents 10-3 over the homestand. The Wings bullpen accumulated a 1.29 ERA allowing just 5 runs (3 earned) in 21 innings pitched.
James Beresford extended his hitting streak to seven games going 1-for-4 Tuesday. Over the seven-game stretch, Beresford is hitting .346 (9-for-26) with one double, five runs and two RBI. Beresford also has a hit in 13 straight games at Frontier Field (.354; 17-for-48).
Doug Bernier started at first base for the Wings on Tuesday afternoon. The last time Bernier started at first base was July 31, 2012 when he was with Scranton Wilkes/Barre (Yankees). That game was also played at Frontier Field. Bernier has now started at 6 different positions for the Wings this season (1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF & RF).
Mike Hessman's first inning home run was his 400th career minor league homer. Hessman becomes one of only four others to enter the 400 MiLB HR club. The veteran is now three away (255) from tying the International League home run record of 258.
