Onanda Park beach and Butler Road swimming area on Canandaigua Lake will be closed for Memorial Day weekend due to recent flooding.

Town Supervisor Pam Helming said the closure of town swimming areas is due to floating debris, high water levels and cold water temperatures.

The park and cabins at Onanda are open, but swimming will not be permitted this weekend. Due to Onanda Park’s lakefront being composed mostly of shale that was damaged during last week’s storms, repair and cleanup will need to be done at the beach for its suitable for use, Helming said.

The stairs used to access the lake on Butler Road are completely submerged, Helming said, making it unsafe for swimmers to enter the water.

Town beaches will open once the water level has receded and debris has been cleared.
