It's going to be one of the keys to making downtown Rochester a regional destination. That's what a developer said today as city, county and state leaders gathered for a symbolic start of construction on the Tower at Midtown.

When the $59-million project is complete, it will be 37,000 square-feet of retail and office space and apartments. It’s part of a larger redevelopment of the old Midtown Plaza. That Rochester landmark was torn down almost seven years ago.

Today Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks thanked developers Buckingham Properties and Morgan Management for quote their confidence in the community. “This site had become a poster child for failed attempts to revitalize the Center City and now fast forward and we are here and I think it's a symbol of the progress we are making in the Center City.”

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren calls it not just an investment in a building but an investment in the people of Rochester. “The Tower at Midtown will create 29 new permanent jobs, retain 316 jobs and create 200 construction jobs.”

Glazer along with Buckingham Properties predicts the Tower at Midtown will bring more people, more rail and housing downtown. “When done, the tower will be a lynchpin, the keystone of a new Center City.”

The Tower at Midtown is expected to be completed in 2015.
