The Rochester Fire Department says a man is now in custody following a large fire overnight on Hazelwood Terrace.
Firefighters say they were called to the scene of the fire at about 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning. When crews first arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke coming from the first and second floors of a residence on Hazelwood. Officials say the fire was so heavy, three hoses were needed to knock it down the before crews could get into the house. Because of the size and design of the house, firefighters say this was a particularly hard fire to fight.
Crews say they were also slightly delayed in responding to the fire due to a fight nearby that police had to respond to.
Crews were eventually able to get the fire under control, but say the house was severely damaged. The fire was deemed suspicious and officials say a suspect was taken into custody related to the fire.
That suspect in that fire is 48-year-old James Robert Pursel. He is currently charged with arson in the third degree.
