Seneca County Sheriff's Office issues warning to boaters

While some lakes are closed this Memorial Day weekend to motorized boating due to high water levels, Seneca and Cayuga lakes are both open. But the Seneca County Sheriff's Office wants boaters to take care when traveling this weekend.

Sheriff Jack Stenberg is cautioning boaters to be on alert for submerged debris. He says due to the recent runoff, there is a large amount of debris in both lakes that could be a hazard to inattentive boaters.

Sheriff Stenberg also asks boaters to reduce wakes in residential areas to prevent damage to docks and seawalls.

Deputies say they will continue to monitor the lake levels and may take more stringent action if needed.
