U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is asking for $100 million in funding for to curb the scourge of heroin in New York and across the country.
The New York Democrat on Monday is asking for an additional $100 million in federal funds to be allocated to the federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program, saying that it will give authorities in New York and New Jersey the boost they needs to better assess heroin's trafficking patterns in the region.
With Mexican heroin flooding the market, Schumer hopes that the additional funding will help develop information-sharing between federal agencies and local law enforcement.
The money would be included in the Senate Appropriation bill, which is being considered within the coming weeks.
