Hazmat crews were on the scene of Route 237 in Genesee County following a tanker tip over.

Officials tell News10NBC that a small tanker carrying 500 pounds ammonia fertilizer tipped just before 8 a.m. in the town of Byron on Route 237 near Cockram Road. That area was closed down while crews worked to ventilate the tank so it could be moved safely.

Firefighters told us how dangerous those fumes can be.

"It will kill you," says Fire Chief Charles Durkee. "If you get a strong enough dose, yes."

"Our people are here with air packs on, hoses ready, you can take and put the water on it. It's very water friendly, and it will just go right down, so it's not going to spread as much."
