A World War II airplane restored by an area aviation history group has arrived in Germany ahead of its scheduled flight during next week's D-Day commemoration events.

The Douglas C-47 transport plane known as Whiskey 7 departed May 15 from the airfield at the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo.

The five-person crew made the cross-Atlantic journey in just under 24 hours of flight time, landing in Prestwick, Scotland last Tuesday after stopovers in Maine, the Canadian Maritimes, Greenland and Iceland.

After a few days in Britain, Whiskey 7 flew to Germany and is now at Ramstein Air Base. The plane leaves Sunday for Cherbourg, France, where it will take part in Friday's 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy.

Whiskey 7 dropped American paratroopers over Normandy on June 6, 1944.
