QUICK LINKS:

Four risky places to use your debit card

Created: 05/27/2014 8:41 AM WHEC.com

With reports of security breaches on the rise, Bankrate.com shares places it considers risky for swiping your debit card.

Debit cards look like credit cards but because money is drawn directly from a checking account, they can give thieves direct access to your money.

Bankrate.com says outdoor ATMs are among the most dangerous places to use a debit card because thieves can more easily place machines over the real card slots to skim information. That same thinking goes with outdoor gas station payment terminals.

The group warns against using debit cards to make purchases online because of the potential for hacking at different points in a transaction.

And it advises consumers against letting their debit card go out of their sight, such as by giving it to a restaurant server.

Consumers may want to consider using cash or a credit card instead.
