The Rochester Red Wings dropped the series finale to the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-1, Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. Chiefs right-hander Taylor Hill threw 8.0 strong innings to earn his league-leading 7th win of the season and help the Chiefs earn a split of the four-game set. Rochester falls back to 2nd place with the loss, while Syracuse flip-flops back into first in the IL North. The Red Wings welcome the Gwinnett Braves (Atlanta) to town on Friday to begin a four-game series.
The combination of Deolis Guerra (2 IP), A.J. Achter (2 IP), Edgar Ibarra (1 IP), and Michael Tonkin (1 IP) -- turned in seven strong innings of relief behind Logan Darnell, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out 10 and not walking a single batter. At one point, the Wings staff retired 14 straight batters.
A.J. Achter tossed two perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts Thursday. Through his first 14 games with the Wings in 2014, Achter owns a 1.88 ERA (5 ER/ 24 IP) and has held the opposition to a .148 batting average against (12-for-81) – 2nd-best among relievers in the IL.
Logan Darnell lasted only two innings allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk (IBB) while striking out four. The left-hander’s outing was his shortest of the season, while throwing 66 pitches (44 strikes). He’s now gone just 3 2/3 innings allowing 9 runs over his two career starts against Syracuse -- both at Frontier Field.
Chris Herrmann left the game in the 3rd inning with a sore wrist. He came in hitting .395 (17-for-43) over his last 11 games with the Wings.
Deibinson Romero picked up the lone RBI with a sac fly in the 7th inning. Over his last 12 games at Frontier Field, Romero is hitting .370 (17-for-46) with 12 RBI. As a team, the Wings managed a tied for season-low 3 base hits for the fourth time in 2014 and first since 5/11 @ TOL.
