A bear was seen wandering around a local school Thursday. It is the second time in a week that a bear has been spotted in the Rochester area. Last Friday, a bear was seen in a neighborhood in Chili. On Thursday, there was another sighting near an elementary school in Hilton.
The bear was spotted at Quest Elementary School in Hilton. Some parents are on the edge after hearing of the sighting.
A black bear was spotted right next to six-year-old Annabella’s school. A neighbor took pictures of the bear. Police were called right away, but the bear was out of sight.
Annabella said, “I’m not afraid.”
But Annabella’s aunt is a little more nervous about the whole thing.
Jennifer Sinboni, Annabella’s aunt, said, “I didn't know that it happened, but it is a little scary because the kids could have been outside playing. I wouldn't want the bear to attack anyone.”
Many parents had heard of the sighting, but not seen the picture like Danielle Browlie, who was watching her son play lacrosse on the fields behind Quest.
Danielle Browlie said, “I wouldn't think a bear would have come that close to the school. I would have thought it they saw it out here on the fields and closer to the woods.”
The school district says after the bear was sighted they didn't let any more kids out on the playground and at dismissal; they had extra staff outside keeping an eye on everything. Parents are happy the school is being cautious, but some feel there is really nothing to worry about.
Bob Ottman said, “The only way that bear would ever bother anyone is if it had little ones, and obviously you'd see them and stay away.”
The district says they will have extra staff outside here Friday keeping a close eye on things as kids come to school.
