ROCHESTER, NY. (Saturday, May 31, 2014) – On Saturday night, the Western New York Flash fell at home for the first time in 2014, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Houston Dash in front of 3,555 fans.  After facing a 1-0 hole at the half, the Dash scored two second-half goals to claim their second win of the season.

After allowing a late, first-half goal in their last game, the Flash were the ones capitalizing in the waning moments of the first 45. In the 44th minute, Adriana Martin sent a spot-on cross from the left side to find McCall Zerboni. Zerboni didn’t hesitate and volleyed the ball cleanly with her left foot past a diving Bianca Henninger.

The Dash, however, pulled the game level early into the second half. Six minutes in, rookie Kealia Ohai turned off of her defender and sent a shot towards Flash goalkeeper Lydia Williams. Williams, in her first game back after securing a World Cup appearance with Australia, had a late jump on the ball, which hit the left post and bounced in.

The visitors pulled ahead for good in the 73rd minute off a Stephanie Ochs corner kick. From the right side, Ochs sent a short in-swinging ball to forward Nina Burger who was able to sneak the ball in on the near post.

Both teams finished the game with double-digit shot attempts, with the Flash holding a 14-10 advantage over Houston.

After earning a free kick in the third minute, Samantha Kerr nearly capitalized off of Adriana’s 25-yard set piece. The Spaniard sent a ball in towards Kerr, who was able to get a headed-deflection toward net, but Henninger was able to cover on the far post.

Saturday marked the first game back for both Kerr and Williams who missed the previous four games while on international duty with the Australian National Team.

The Dash worked an early chance when Burger blocked a pass from defender Kristen Edmonds five minutes in. The Austrian drove toward Flash goalkeeper Williams, but her shot went wide to the left. Ohai later tested Williams with a shot from distance, but the Australian keeper was able to catch the ball at the center of her line.

In the 31st minute, after deflecting her pass, Carli Lloyd muscled past Ochs and took a difficult-angle shot, barely missing the left post.  Lloyd, who made her 2014 home debut Saturday night, and Kerr led the Flash with four shots in the game.

With the game 1-1 in the 60th minute, former Flash midfielder Becky Edwards nearly put the visitors ahead, but her six-yard volley off a Tiffany McCarty cross sailed high of the crossbar.

Minutes before their second goal, McCarty was played a long ball from Ella Masar. With Edmonds applying pressure, McCarty was forced into a shot that was saved by Williams.

The Flash looked to equalize in the 82nd minute as Sonia Bermudez collected a blocked Vicky Losada shot, but her attempt sailed high of the goal. In stoppage time, Henninger came up with a save on Kerr, but the ball ricocheted to Lloyd. The midfielder nearly had an open net to shoot at, but Dash defender Arianna Romero blocked the Flash opportunity to preserve her team’s three points. Western New York generated a number of game-tying opportunities late, but could not find their second goal.

The Flash will head on the road for another three-game road trip, the team’s second this season. The first stop will be in Kansas City on Wednesday, facing the Blues at 8:00 p.m. ET. In the first meeting between the two clubs this season, the Flash came out victorious, 2-1 at Sahlen’s Stadium.
