Liberals emboldened by promises of support from Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo are redoubling efforts to raise New York's minimum wage from $8 to $10.10 an hour, and let high-cost areas like New York City raise it even further.
State Senate Democrats say Monday that they're counting on Cuomo's support to pass the wage increase. The proposal includes automatic wage increases tied to inflation and empowers local governments to set minimums up to 30 percent higher than the statewide figure.
Cuomo had criticized the idea of local minimum wages but on Saturday said he'd back the proposal and other liberal priorities. In exchange, his re-election bid was endorsed by the left-leaning Working Families Party.
Party co-chair Karen Scharff calls Cuomo's support a "game changer" for liberal causes, including increasing the wage.
